Choosing A Hosting Company?

Choosing A Hosting Company?

I only provide hosting for special projects–and usually just for testing. I can help you make the right choice, but I have no ‘arrangement’ with any company.

In general I am fairly agnostic about hosting. The truth is that if you have a small web site just about any of the well-known hosting companies will probably be more than adequate. However, for some reason, this choice seems to matter to a lot of first-timers. My guess is that you’re thinking of it like ‘construction’ in the real world; where the materials matter. In fact, this is one of the smallest considerations.

Now for larger sites? The choice of host matters a lot. In that case, we choose based on the project scope and who we choose will be based on too many factors to go into here.

Although I will say this: I am a big fan of great support. One big difference in price between two hosting companies is their support team. For example, I’m thinking of two companies which provide Drupal Hosting. One charges $20 per month and the other $50 per month. Both are very reputable. The key difference is that the $20 choice offers no phone support and no guaranteed response time. The $50 choice has knowledgeable people available by phone 24/7/365. So the question really is about insurance. How bad will it hurt if your site goes down and you can’t instantly reach someone to get it fixed.
