One More New Years Resolution?

Hi,

OK, so maybe we're already at Valentines Day. But if you're like me, you're just now getting around to actually planning your 'new year.' For many of us, it's the 'calm before the storm': tax season and so on. So now is a great time to re-consider your web site—well... right after you take care of the flowers, chocolates and dinner reservations, right? But right after that, your next step? Web Site Resolutions For 2012!

It's Time For Your SEO Checkup

You know I go on and on that your web site is a living thing and not a static 'yellow pages ad.' Not only do rankings change, but the words your visitors use to find you can change. So it's important to check in periodically and make sure your content is competing well. And if it isn't? We fix it; before it gets out of hand.

So What's New?

For that matter, have you done new things lately that your visitors need to know about? Great. Let's make sure it's out there. And even if you haven't, we need to make something up. Seriously! Remember that search engines value 'freshness'. You need to present new content on a regular basis in order to rank as high as possible. A new splash page or a feed to social media sites might be just the ticket.

Mailing List

Have you sent out a mailing list (like this) recently? If not, you should. If you haven't done one in a while, you will probably be amazed at the response you'll get to a well executed letter. Even better? Even if you have no new products or services to talk about, sending out a mailing list provides the 'freshness' I just talked about that search engines love. Additionally, it helps you winnow the wheat from the chaff, as the saying goes. You'll find out which visitors are no longer around, which have moved, etc. It doesn't have to be fancy (mine sure aren't.) It just has to look neat and remind people you're alive and well. If it has some useful information? So much the better.

Get Out The Job Jar

Finally, it's a good time to take a few minutes and put together a list of 'nigglies'—all those things which needed doing but just weren't important enough by themselves to call me. Gathered together, we can probably get them done for a bargain price (It's much more efficient for me to tackle ten little things in one go than as separate jobs.) Maybe a few years ago it was OK to let the occasional typo or inconsistency slide, but these days visitors expect your site will be perfect. The days of excuses like 'Oh, I have an old browser' just don't cut it anymore. Regardless of your aspirations, your site needs to be as polished as any magazine ad.

——————————

OK, that's more than enough for now. I know you're busy, but I hope I've given you some good ideas as to how we can work together to increase traffic and make your visitors even happier. But even if you don't have a thing for me to work on at present (shocking but possible) just drop me a line anyway and let me know how things are going; web-wise or any-wise (if that's even a word.) It's always good to hear from you.

Sincerely,

  • Mailing Lists Work
They are among the least expensive and most effective ways to keep you in the minds of your audience. Better still? They help with SEO.
  • Get Out The Job Jar!
Send me a list of all those little things you'd like to fix. Tackled in one go, they're usually inexpensive to do. A little extra polish goes a long way towards improving your image with visitors.
