Should I Build My Site With WordPress?
WordPress® is the largest web site platform on the planet. It is used for sites of every size, from one page to very large commercial entities. The basic package is free, it’s easy to install and works well. So why not use it for everything? The answer: it’s not always the right tool. But it’s not right for every site. Part of my job is helping select the proper site for you that provides the best value for money. In my opinion, WordPress is best suited for sites which are going to be regularly updated. After all, it was invented to make blogging easy.
For very small or very static sites, eg. what I call business card sites, it can be overkill. In fact, I have had clients insist that I use WordPress for a one page site—simply because another person recommended it as ‘the thing to have’. When you design a site with WordPress you need to include the functionality of a ‘blog’, ninety percent of which you’re not using. So you’re forcing me to install a ton of code that you’ll likely never use. And since WordPress (like all blog platforms) needs to be updated regularly, you’re committing yourself to maintenance. And for larger sites, especially shopping carts, WordPress is also often a poor fit. There are much better platforms for selling lots of products, or for organizing lots of different types of content.
